This is my second exhibition at the Malvern Hills Gallery. My first, two years ago, was entitled 'Ephemera' because of my interest in subject matter which has transient qualities , for example, fleeting light effects on landscape. This present exhibition is a continuation of this theme. I have included paintings of flowers and children, as I feel that these subjects symbolise both the passage of time and fragility.
In my flower studies my aim is to paint , not botanical portraits, but to capture the character of an individual group of flowers in a painterly way. This is usually done by using watercolours in a wet-to-wet manner, which I think expresses a sense of their irridescence and translucency.
In my landscapes, I often include figures. Not only does this lend a sense of scale to the picture, but also expresses how an individual may beel overwhelmed by a sense of the power and grandure of nature.
I enjot working predominantly in watercolours and oils - the former a means of rapid expression, the latter when I wish to make a bolder or more personal statement. |
