ARTISTIC IMPRESSIONS

Ruth Boothby

Elaine Manwaring

Ruth studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Manchester College of Art and Design.

Her career has taken her elsewhere but she has always been active in the field, doing book illustration, murals, design work and drawings of people's housesw as well as exhibiting paintings and attending various art classes.

Since moving to Malvern from London she has been able to concentrate on developing a more 'painterly' style whilst still retaining the qualities of drawing w2hich come most naturally to her.

She enjoys painting interesting buildings, especially industrial monuments, e.g., Gloucester docks and of course the Malvern Hills but she gets most satisfaction from tackling difficult subjects, mainly the exciting patterns and juxtapositions found in nature or the environment.

Elaine was born in Kent, as she says, quite a long time ago.

She married into the RAF and spent many years living abroad and in the U.K. She moved to Malvern with her second husband in 1990.

She took up painting and drawing in 1997 when she joined Tia Lambert's drawing class at Malvern Hills College. Until that time she had mostly been interested in dressmaking and photography.

After moderate success in the drawing class, Elaine decided to have a go at watercolour painting, still with Tia Lambert, which shows in her flower studies.

Elaine has also been influenced by her friend, Aubrey Phillips, who demonstrates his style of painting to the students at the college.
